James Amato is a Wisconsin native residing in Wyoming. He received his B.S. and M.S degrees in Geosciences from the University Wisconsin-Milwaukee with an emphasis in sedimentology, geomorphology, and geophysics. His research has spanned across Quaternary glaciation in Iceland and Wisconsin, to Late Paleozoic glaciation in Brazil.
Upon graduating in 2017, James joined the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, Department of Geology as their Instrumentation Specialist. He co-instructed the UWO Geology Field Camp and co-led other interim field courses. He facilitated all the department’s marketing and communications and maintained all laboratory instruments and field equipment.
In 2020, James joined the Wyoming State Geological Survey as their Map Editor and Geospatial Technical Principal. He served as the agency’s primary point of contact and subject matter expert for geographic information systems (GIS) and technologies. He created and reviewed geological maps and databases for accuracy and aesthetics following GeMS and FDGC cartographic standards. In 2023, James joined the 3D Visualization Center in the School of Energy Resources (SER) at the University of Wyoming as a Research Scientist. He oversees SER’s GIS and Remote Sensing capabilities.
James is proficient in field geology and application of GIS. He is an FAA licensed drone pilot and leads the unmanned aerial systems (UAS) program at SER. James is currently wrapping up a second M.S. degree in GIS & Technologies with an emphasis in UAS from the Wyoming Geographic Information Science Center (WyGISC) at the University of Wyoming.
